V Drives Transmission Rattle

I had the pleasure of changing the plates in both my motors (7.4's w/Hurth transmissions). Out the door it was $5k, Pretty steep but better than buying new trannies. Sound is gone and motors are running well

Thanks Bermuda!
What size is the boat & did they remove the transmissions, or the engines(or the cockpit)?

The rattling you are talking about, is it like a bell ringing?

EDIT...LOL:rolleyes: 10 years ago... I got suckered in by Seaplane . Maybe it will help someone anyway.

I'll chime in. I get a little crazy when it comes to doing things right. I can tell you this.. I have the same rattle you are describing. Over the winter I had a couple teeth on my flywheel go bad and had to replace it. I ended up replacing the damper while I was at it. The rattle happens sometimes at idle and sometimes at like 800 rpm then goes away. All the research and troubleshooting I did, it's the internals of the transmission. Gear chatter..It's normal and does have to do with the tune up most of the time. Replacing the damper didn't help it. I have been told every transmission sounds different. I'm going on 4 years now with many trips and not a problem with the trans. Here are some pics what the damper looks like.

We found the ringing noise. Pulled the starter, it was missing a piece. The piece was found inside the bell housing which was rattling on the flywheel. I’m a lucky guy!
