So now what do you do with reopening ?

This is almost as interesting as portable generators and pigs on boats.

I live on the north shore of Lake Pontchatrain (New Orleans is on the south shore) in a town of just over 10,000 and the population of the parish (county) is 280,000. We have a relatively low number of cases and deaths with the majority of them in the more populated areas. Other than spas, salons, gyms, etc. and restaurants and bars, and we have a lot of them, it's almost business as usual. The grocery stores are stocked, Lowe's and Home Depot are crowded and I would say about 25% of customers are wearing a mask....mostly the elderly.
It appears that Lowe's employees are required to wear masks but only about 2 in 10 have them up over their noses.
Golf courses are open and busy.

The state is re-opening on the 15th unless something changes drastically. Restaurants and bars will re-open but with reduced inside seating. It won't affect us because my wife and I don't eat out much. I am 70 years old and pretty healthy. I have never worn a mask. I have a bottle of hand sanitizer in all the cars and use it before and after shopping. My normal life has not been too upset. However, I have/had a trip planned for a week in Cancun with my 3 adult children, their significant others and 2 granddaughters leaving June 20th. Tonight we had a video meeting and have decided to postpone for one year. We looked at pushing it back 3 months but that puts us in hurricane season so, nope. Looked at November-December but the kids had too much year-end stuff going on. Therefore....next June. But it wasn't the fear of the virus that made us change our plans, it was not knowing what would be open. Don't want to travel for a vacation and not be able to enjoy all there is too enjoy.

For people with health situations like Mr. Boyd, they should stay inside. If someone is more comfortable in a mask and gloves by all means wear them. If staying in is what you need to do then do it. For me, the only time I got a flu shot I got the flu. I rarely get sick, go to the doctor 2 times a year for prescription renewals and a cardiology check up....but that's what works for me. On the other hand I have no reason nor desire to drive 30 miles across the lake and go into New Orleans with a high number of cases. That would be just stupid.. But I do believe in the herd immunity, sunshine and activity along with keeping a safe distance from people I don't know.

Bottom line....for me is, do what you feel comfortable doing. I figure I've got 20-25 years left (Mom is 94) and I don't want to live them in a bubble....that's not living.

While true, there is no need for the mask nazis out there. Wife was at the grocery store and having trouble breathing with her mask. A little panicked she pulled it below her nose show she could breath. And then the mask nazi accosted her. Wasn’t a good day.

I’ve found the masks hard to breathe through too. They also fog up my glasses.
I’ve found bandanas to be a better choice. It feels like I get more oxygen through the bottom and my glasses don’t seem to fog up as much.
It’s also nice to be able to just pull it back down around my neck when I get back to my car and have it ready to quickly pull back up again at the next stop.
Between the bandana, sunglasses and occasionally a hoodie, I can easily do stickups too when it gets to that point.

I’ve found that not wearing a mask whenever legal helps keep the snowflakes away.

If I go into a store I’ll put it on but then I pull it down below my nose so I don’t rebreathe.

Should a mask nazi approach me... they will meet Scarface.

Someone approached me at Lowe’s the other day and told me, “You should be wearing a mask.” I responded, “you need to shut your pie hole and move away from me.” Man that felt good.
Nawww....just kidding but I’ve thought it a time or two....

I say we come up with a placebo vaccine to end the irrational panic

Interesting....after 9/11 Homeland Security was formed and from that TSA, which couldn't catch a cold let alone a terrorist. (I flew cross country from Washington DC to California, shortly after TSA was placed in the airports, seated next to a high level Homeland Security officer who told me, "The worst thing we did was give TSA metal badges.") TSA was put in place to give the general flying public peace of mind and the illusion of security. We need something similar now. Something that will give the public peace of mind and allow them to go on with their lives.

In 1968-69 the Hong Kong Flu hit the globe. In the US over 100,000 people lost their lives to the virus. We didn't shut ourselves indoors, we didn't close businesses, we still assembled (remember Woodstock?), we did not have instant media spreading fake news and we didn't have a country so divided politically that it used anything to point blame and suspicion to the other side. We lived our lives, urged the elderly to stay indoors and for everyone to use caution. Herd immunity at it's finest and eventually it all but disappeared....later to be replaced by several others (Bird Flu, H1N1, SARS) that we survived but we didn't do it by allowing the government to dictate what we could or could not do. And when this virus is gone another will arise and the cycle will continue long past when any of us currently members of this forum this are gone.

In 1995 Nobel Laureate, Joshua Lederberg, Ph.D. was quoted, "The single biggest threat to man's continued dominance on this planet is the virus." Unfortunately, this won't be the last one....

Covid-19 is now the number 1 cause of death in the US. How is concern over that irrational?
Ummm….that's not accurate.

From the CDC for the year 2017 (the latest year posted but there is no reason to believe these numbers have gone down)
Number of deaths for leading causes of death:
  • Heart disease: 647,457
  • Cancer: 599,108
  • Accidents (unintentional injuries): 169,936
  • Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 160,201
  • Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 146,383
  • Alzheimer’s disease: 121,404
  • Diabetes: 83,564
  • Influenza and Pneumonia: 55,672
  • Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome and nephrosis: 50,633
  • Intentional self-harm (suicide): 47,173
Mr. Boyd I have always respected your views and opinions on all things boat related. Your posts are usually factual and well thought out. And I understand your personally health concerns but your statement regarding the #1 cause of death in the US seems out of the norm for you as well as alarmist, irrational and irresponsible as well as an illustration of why social media is so dangerous.

I understand your fear for your personal well-being and you should take all the precautions available to you to keep exposure to the virus away. The best of luck to you....

Annual numbers aside, currently Covid-19 is killing more people on a daily basis than anything else. So I believe that quantifies as the number one cause of death at this time. We’ll see how the year plays out.

647,547 / 365 = 1,774 per day vs 2000 per day. The 2000 per day fatality rate is according to the Senate Hearing going on as I write this. I guess yesterday, today, and for every day for the next several weeks it will be the number one cause of death. Also the view expressed by the medical experts under Senate questioning.

I’m not sure how making a factual statement is alarmist especially in light of these numbers being based on infections during the middle of the stay at home shutdown.

Henry - Per the Worldometers website. We haven't been as high as 2,000 deaths per day for almost a week - and when we did exceed 2,000 deaths per day it was only for a few days. The average is lower that that.

I am not discounting your caution. I am a cancer survivor also and could be compromised. Just presenting accurate information as reported.
