2000 7.4 Horizon rattle in tranny in neutral at idle

John,
Thanks for that Info. I feel a lot better now.
I know as soon as you move the throttle off of idle the rattle went away so I didn’t think I had tranny issue yet especially on both Transmissions at the same time. Just wanted to make sure that I wasn’t causing any damage.

Enjoy your boat!

Noise is friction. Friction is wear.

Noise comes from tolerances which may or not be related to wear. All it would take is a few high rpm shifts or prop strikes to get a damper plate to make that noise. In any event....it is nothing to worry about unless it starts rattling like rocks in a metal garbage can at any rpm.;)

Don't adjust the idle out of spec just to stop the rattle. If the idle is too high, its hard on the transmissions shifting in and out of gear. Just set it to the specs for your engine/transmission. I think mine is 650.
Don't think, know. You can't adjust the idle on a properly working MAG MPI Horizon Gen VI. The ECM does it for you.
with the linkage, you can mess with the forward gear idle speed to get close, but the ECM will keep trying to override you.
Carb engine, different story. Get Service Manual 23, and only pay attention to the MIE Horizon entries.
