Still not a complete engine. ECM may be hard to find. Other bits too. We have decided to get the 8.1L. We are going to take advantage of insurance company generosity. May get the stbd one changed next year. Will have two new engines in it then, and resale value should reflect that.
Ya, I had it explained to me. The rear of the motor is still left hand turning so no issues with transmission. I spoke with a guy who has a 380 and said the same thing happened to him. He had to replace a 454 and couldn't find one during COVID. So the same mechanic did his work and put in a...
The mechanic says the issue is that changing to a smaller engine would need to change the transmissions so that I would get the torque required to get up on plane. A gear ratio problem. He says he has done this on numerous cruisers successfully.
The mechanic estimate quote said he could not repair the current engine. Quoted 8.1 496 Mercruiser complete engine $25550. Insurance company approved it.
We looked at this. However, the engine is being replaced through an insurance claim. The mechanic says it is better to have a new engine than a rebuilt one, even if the two motors are different, when it comes to resale value. Also, he thinks the ECM has failed and he says he can't find a...
Both engines rotate counter clockwise. Left hand. The new mercruiser is also CCW, left hand turn. but I guess it is not a V drive engine. It is meant to face forward. The mechanic says all he has to do is turn the engine around so it faces backwards, then swap the exhaust manifolds so they...
We have to replace our port failed 454 Mercruiser with a different engine because they are not made anymore. The mechanic says he can buy a standard engine and just flip it around. Is this possible? my pervious engines were left hand turning. The propellers were inward turning. If the new...
I was thinking they should be, because the starter cranks the engine in a certain direction, correct? The ECM just monitors crankshaft and throttle position and tells the injectors when to fire .... I think. I need to do more research obviously.
I'll check when I get home, but I believe we looked at that and one was clockwise and the other counter. I can't remember which was which. If so, at the ECMs still just plug and play?
