Thank you for replies, I think inspecting the screw holes and knocking is doable. I was alarmed because of the pattern of the stains, definitely looks like it is spreading from the top, where the wire goes through transom.

Thank you everybody for the input, it's a great community! I ended up putting a deposit on a near mint 1987 Sorrento S24, with 5.7 and 280 original hours, always stored indoors. The price is $8500 including trailer. Is it a fair deal, or should I reconsider?
