    Tachometer Problems Intermittent

Hello Again: Insane great boat. Very solid and well made. Engine access can be a bit tight. For major repairs suggest removing engine cover/seat. I have learned a lot about this boat/engine combo so ask away. The 383 MPI MAG engine is very powerful and drives a Mercury Duo Prop.

    Tachometer Problems Intermittent

Hello Cat Man: My engine is a 383 MPI mag and the 10 PIN connector is located on the back Starboard side not far behind the throttle body air input. It is hard to miss. Quite large and mau be pressed into a U holder to hold it in place. Large brass pins/sockets that need cleaning and pins may...

Engine Overheating at Higher Speed/RPM, Helpful Solution

Good work. Great feeling when you find it. Looks exactly like the pieces of impellor that were in my one way valve. Yes, I see from some diagrams that there are two valves. My engine only has that one vertical blue yellow valve but same problem, "Much crud on input side = random flow on output...

Engine Overheating at Higher Speed/RPM, Helpful Solution

This is what mine looked like. Yours looks like it is a dual valve. Built in anti flow back and diverter valve. Looks like two ports are standard hose clamps like in this picture but the other is a PIPE THREAD that threads into the manifold or block. The valve is most likely plastic so a good...

Engine Overheating at Higher Speed/RPM, Helpful Solution

Hello: I did more research and discovered that the valve on my engine was actually OEM and not some aftermarket add on. The Mercury part number is 21-862271A1. It is Blue and Yellow plastic with a blue drain valve on the side. Inside was a one way ball valve totally jammed with crud. I can...

Engine Overheating at Higher Speed/RPM, Helpful Solution

Sounds like you must have opened up/cleaned out something to increase the flow. Removing pipes may have dislodged the blockage and it washed itself out. Temps like that are very good, depending on thermostat that you are using. I am running a 160 marine thermo and my 6.2 MPI now runs between 160...

Engine Overheating at Higher Speed/RPM, Helpful Solution

Yes, that is the Mercury OEM version. My yellow one was aftermarket. inside that cup like structure is the drainback valve that can get blocked. If you cannot remove it you might try flushing each of the openings with water from a garden hose. You might also flush the cooler while you are at it...

    What Sets the Ratio

Hello All: On Bravo 1 or 3s, what part of the outdrive sets the drive ratio. The upper or lower outdrive? I want to switch a Bravo 1 lower to a Bravo 3 lower, and wonder if this will change the ratio? I know the upper gears help define ratio, but don't know how much the lower contributes?

    Adding a Fuel/Water separator, 2007 8.1 Mercs

Good point. My engine, 383 MAG MPI has the first version fuel cooler, not the 3 which I have heard has some issues. Have you heard if Merc has anything to say about two separators? The first one is very free flowing, essentially a reservoir style separator.

    Adding a Fuel/Water separator, 2007 8.1 Mercs

Fully agree re plastic. It was a name brand but still melted and leaked. Suspect counterfeit.... Re Parker, well know manuf of quality products. Sticking to Mercury and Parker for the two in line that I use. Have not had a problem since I added missing O ring to gas fill cap.

    Adding a Fuel/Water separator, 2007 8.1 Mercs

I would stick with Mercury OEM brand filters. I installed an aftermarket well known brand and plastic parts melted and leaked. I now have two of them in line and they work really well. I have not had good luck with the ones that have a transparent bowl and bottom drain valve. Found that water...

Engine Overheating at Higher Speed/RPM, Helpful Solution

NOTE: I just totally removed mine and replaced with a aluminum tube the same ID as the hose. Cools even better and water does not drainback in any case on my motor.

Engine Overheating at Higher Speed/RPM, Helpful Solution

Hello: Ok On top front of engine is the thermostat housing with hose distribution. There should be a hose coming up from the PORT side of the engine, to the thermo housing. Mine was located just after the bend to go down the front of the engine, but was an aftermarket, thus the color yellow. The...
