My boat has been at Columbia Marine Center getting a new Westerbeke 15KW diesel generator installed after we put up with the old one sputtering and spitting for the past year or so. Today was the day we finally got to bring it back. On board were me, the owner of the marina that did the work, and one of his new guys who had assisted with the installation at certain points. The reason the young guy came along was because he'd been up on the flybridge and was amazed about how good the view was.

So we pulled out of the marina and I told him to go .ahead and take the helm. His eyes lit up, his smile went ear to ear and I didn't have to ask him a second time. So he drove the boat from just outside the marina through the raised railroad bridge then beneath another bridge that's just outside my marina. I asked him if he wanted to back it into the slip and he was quick to come out with a resounding "NO".

All things considered, I think he'd agree that this was a great day in his new career as a boat fixer.

That's awesome GFC. He will never forget that. I had my 5 year old great nephew on board last year (his first time on a boat)and I said here you drive. He thought he was in heaven. His smile was huge. He looked at my niece (his mom)and said take my picture mom, take my picture. He didn't even care that it was in Auto-pilot.:D:D:D

I figured Beachcomber must have been over there getting the generator worked on.
I visited mine today, first time since late February.

Yup ...probably made his whole dang month.

Around here there's too many bleeping logs for me to ever be this trusting.

Not many better deals than as a fortunate boat owner making a kids day. We do this often.....tis a very positive thing.

Well done...

I know it may sound overly dramatic, but you could very well have changed his life. I'm a strong believer in pivotal moments.

Nicely done GFC. My 12 year old son has been working on his license so "he can drive Dad around"

I love letting boat newbies take the helm, always produces a big smile when those diesels spin up and the turbos kick in. I remember my first time on my 370EC when that happened and I was giggling like a school girl.

Would love to hear the stories he shared with his friends. Reminds me of when someone let me drive their Corvette when I was just a teenager.
