Bad news for some boaters this past weekend after learning that dozens of vessels had been broken into at a local marina.

It happened overnight on Saturday at the Phillippi Harbor Club in Sarasota. All types of electronics from about 30 boats were taken.

“Pretty big shock. It’s not how you want to start any day, but definitely not a Sunday,” Eric Lepley, the manager at Phillippi Harbor Club, said.

Just a few minutes after opening the doors to the hanger, the crew at the Philippi Harbor Club noticed that the electronics of one of the first boats were missing.

“We started to walk the inside of the facility, and peeked into other boats, and that’s when we noticed that there was equipment missing and multiple other boats as well,” Lepley added.

It wasn’t just a handful, but more than 30 boats that had missing equipment. The majority were the ones stored near the ground, but a few on the second level of the hanger were also affected.

Seems like stealing stuff from boats is an everyday occurrence in Florida. On another boating site I constantly see guys taking about: boats, motors, props and outboard lower units being stolen especially in southern Florida.

No cameras? Dang. That must have taken quite a lot of time - 30 boats worth? Unless you're talking all surface mounted stuff...sheesh.

That's a terrible start to 2020 for those boat owners.

no cams? i'll bet that's $300 the management wishes they'd spent. ridiculous.

No cameras, no wonder they were targeted. No way to run a boat business of any type.

no alarm system, no cameras.... this sucks !!
My marina was hit 3 years ago, 10 boathouses broken into, 6 dinghies stolen, tons of electronics and anything else they could get their hands on. I installed SimplySafe immediately and have slept better since. Our marina still hasn't installed Wi-Fi yet... :-(

Is it cellular based? Cost?

Yes, cellular-based. I just bought a 2nd set up for our house with the AARP discount it was 50% off at $275.00 and monthly is $15 or $25 or self-monitor for free... At the boat is really gives peace of mind because of the power outage, CO, smoke, freeze & water alarms and of course the burglar alarm features.

Just yesterday a few of us were talking about Moss Marine in Ft Myers Beach and one of the guys said that a couple of years ago, someone cut a hole in the side of the building and did the same thing.

Couple of years ago a friend in Marathon was on his boat with the dinghy in the water behind the boat, tied with a couple of lines.

During the night the lines were cut and the dinghy stolen.

They keep saying crime is down around here.
Might be related to all my fellow New Yorkers fleeing to Florida................
