Replacing Highfield valves - threads too snug

I am replacing the valves on my Highfield dingy. The new valves are the right ones but the threads on the new valve are just too snug in the old nut for me to hold the nut by hand. Any ideas? Should I try lubricating the new threads? Can I chase the threads in some way to smooth them down a bit?
