So going on 5 weeks out of the water due to a bad seal and a scored shaft
My question is that I am having a new shaft made for this side and will do the port side in the fall. Some are telling me that I can take the old shaft to a machine shop to fix the scoring and possibly use for the other side if needed. Any recommendations on doing that or just go with another new shaft if needed
Thanks

Yes, capable machine shop can easily fix scoring ask if they have the capability to metalize. They "spray" molten metal over the damaged area larger than the needed diameter and then turn it down to spec on a lathe. Much quicker than having to wait 5 weeks during prime boating season.

This should cost you a couple hundred max. I wouldn’t buy a new shaft. This isn’t a big deal.

I wish I posted earlier as the shaft was being made, I will take the old one to a machine shop so that when I do port side I will be ready
Thanks

Even easier the shaft log tube can be extended or shortened which would place the seal'packing in a different spot on the shaft. This would stop the leak and no need to replace the shaft.
