2000 Sea Ray 340 Sundancer

7.4 Mag MPI
I am looking at a 2002 340 Sundancer with twin 5.7 MPI and Bravo 3. Anyone have any feedback about the performance?
Thanks

I believe that boat has a 17 degree deadrise - It will perform well with the BIIIs - for comparison's sake - the same year 320 is the same overall dimensions as that boat, but heavier and with 21 degrees of deadrise - they were available with the same motor, in a v-drive configuration and many people find them adequately powered....

I have the mercruiser 7.4l engines and Bravo 3's. They provide plenty of power for my 2000 340 Sundancer.
However, I am not sure if the 5.7l will provide enough power. I could be wrong but it seems to me that that size engine (5.7) would usually be in a 300 or 280 Sundancer.

I have not heard of that size engine in that size boat.... Can you take it for a test cruise for a performance evaluation?

I previously owned a 2000 340 but had the 7.4 Horizons in it. The 2000 was a 16,000 lb boat once you added fuel, water, supplies and people. I was glad I had the extra HP

A pretty common power package for this vintage 340 was a 6.2L with V-drives. I would imagine a 5.7L I/O would have similar get-up and go comparatively.

A test drive would be a great idea. I'd be willing to bet this power package would be perfectly acceptable. And on the "really slick" side of the consideration, working on a set of 5.7L mains in this boat would be an absolute dream compared to the 7.4/8.1's!!! :)

I will test run it but being under powered is my concern.

Yes there is a ton of room to work and at least things that I can commonly do myself, I will still be able to. With the 7.4 there is ZERO room for anything.

I will be test running it over the weekend and make a determination at that point.

I was one soft deck from obtaining one with the 7.4 Horizons. Boat flat out hauled ass for a 34.

I have 7.4 horizons in the same hull but inboards. I'd never consider small blocks with inboards but with the B3's it'll likely perform well unless full of fuel water and lots of people (the difference is dramatic on mine). The downside is it will definitely be a tough sell when you're done with it. I/O's and small blocks is a tough sell on a boat that size. Get into it right so you can get out without taking a beating and you'll be fine. Don't pay anywhere near a big block inboard price or you'll get hurt.

You should try to find a similar hulled boat with big blocks (7.4's or 8.1s) and test drive it for comparison. ITs the only way to really know. That same 17 degree deadrise hull was used from 1995 330s to 1990 330/340s and the 2000 to 2002. So there has to be an example in that vintage range for you to test. The hulls are the same, so any performance differences will be with the engines.

In my view there will be a major difference between 350's and the big blocks. I have heard that the 6.2s perform almost as well as the big blocks, but they run harder to do so. It depends on how you boat, but if you need to be quick on plane, I think you will be disappointed with small blocks.

I ended up with a 2000 340 with 7.4 V-Drives. Thank you for all of your input.
Excellent choice. My post was being typed as you posted. I doubt you would have liked the 350's.

Can you comment on the difference in performance, since it seems you have sea trialed both boats?

I actually never sea trialed the 340 with 5.7/ B3's.. I was going to and depending on performance make an offer, literally the next day he sold it before I spoke with him. From what the guy was saying, the performance was similar to 7.4's and I would tend to agree. The engines are roughly 400 lbs less (total) and 40 hp less total, it would make sense that the performance was similar. Unfortunately though I never found out form myself.
