On the Port engine of my 7.4L Merc on my 2000 340 DA, the circulating pump (the pump that's on the front of the engine) is making knocking noises.

My mechanic looked at the engine and immediately diagnosed the problem as the circulating pump is going (or is already) bad. He will "try" to get the part and replace it by this weekend.

SO, my question is, if he is too busy and cannot replace that pump by this upcoming weekend,
CAN/Should I STILL USE THE BOAT??????

(I am guessing the prudent response would be: DONT USE the boat until the pump is replaced?)

Have heard a bad dampener making a knocking noise.

Scoflaw.... SO, you are saying do NOT use the boat until the pump is replaced????

What is a "dampener"??? (Is that for the fan belt tensioner?)

Well it's only a matter of time before the knock turns into a boom and the boat ride is over. Will it be the next ride or not, who knows.

Oops.. *Damper, also known as the harmonic balancer for crankshaft.

yeah, usually they start making noise and / or leaking - at that point your on borrowed time. It won't hurt to run it, just keep an eye on things, when it finally fails, like Scoflaw said, the boat ride is over. Assuming your engines are raw water cooled? If the pump is leaking and you are raw water cooled it's could spray water (salt) around in the engine room - if it is freshwater (closed cooling) all the coolant will leak out. So if it is actually leaking, might to be a good idea to run it.
