Boat Marina Sues Boat Owners

That's a bad situation all around... you should have insurance on your boat. I don't see how boat owners could make the marina liable unless the fire started in a marina facility. I don't know how that works... If it started on one particular boat, could the owner be liable?

No one wins in these cases. However, the boat owners needed to maintain adequate insurance, then file a claim, and let their insurance company go figure out if the marina reimburses them.

The original news story was a mechanic was working on a boat in rack storage and it caught on fire. That being said - it sounds like since it was rack storage and the value of some of the boats was not super high that some or many of them did not have insurance. I know where we keep our boat the marina wants a copy of the insurance. I was talking to a local boat dealer and he said he had a call from someone that ordered a new boat while his was still on fire.

Yup. I trailer and rent a parking spot at our local marina. They also store it for me over the winter. This is their basic rules on the web.
"3. INSURANCE: BOAT OWNER agrees to carry sufficient all risk insurance and public liability insurance ($500,000 minimum) along with property damage insurance and agrees to supply Marina with a copy of insurance policy. MARINA may require a current survey."

NSM in Michigan had a fire that was started by an owner who was working on his boat and ignited fumes with open flame. He was held partly liable for the fire. He paid a heavy financial price for his negligence as well as pain and suffering cause by his severe burns.
