Howdy,

In November 2020, I bought a 2006 Sundeck 270 that was used on Long Island Sound and i will use the boat on LI sound, calling Stamford, CT home.

The previous owner kept the boat in a slip for the season and i will do the same.

How do i know what type of paint is currently on the hull?
The previous owner does not know.
The paint is black if that provides an indication.

The boat was hauled for a pre-purchase survey. I don't recall there being any barnacles on the hull prior to the power wash. That does not mean there were none, but if the bottom had been heavily covered in barnacles, i would likely have remembered that.

There are a few small patches where the bottom paint is thin or flaking off. The pre-purchase survey recommends touching up as necessary.

Thanks for the help!

George

Paint is most likely an ablative type. Your comment that its thin in spots would support that.

Ablative is good because as you move through the water, the paint wears away to expose fresh paint an biocide. It will wear down so it doesn't build up like a hard epoxy paint, and is usually multiseason (doesn't deactivate when out of the water).

You can apply just about any other ablative paint of another ablative, so long as the existing paint is clean and in good condition. For any areas that are flaking off, you can blend the edges with a sander to get a smooth transition (important to maintain an efficient surface). Be sure to wear a good RESIPRATOR to protect against the toxic dust that sanding will produce.

As to specific paint, there are a ton. Best to ask around for what works in your particular harbor as some work better than others. Absent a recommendation consider a water-based option like Pettit Hydrocoat.

Always used Woolsey ablative, this year they changed name to Seachoice, same stuff, highly recommend. Easiest way to tell if you have ablative, take a hose with water and wash paint with rag, if it starts to wash away it’s ablative.

Just put on the new colorkote from Seahawk on my 410.. underwater is all PropGlide..
so far for 6 months its doing very well here in SW Florida.
