You have to watch the oil weight if your motor has needle bearings (i.e. roller lifters or rockers), don't want anything too thick otherwise those bearings get starved in cold starts or long idle periods. You need to stick to the OEM weight recommendation religiously in those case. 100%...

Thought you'd never ask!
I'm all over FL these days, we'll find the time soon.

Re: A Florida based 1987 390 Express Restoration - New Canvas
Been busy. We moved to the Pensacola area, changed jobs/contracts 4 times :smt101
Managed to find time to rebuild the 454 in my Sea Ray, bearings were gone, darn gas motors! :smt043
Trying to to get back to central FL. Bays up...
Re: A Florida based 1987 390 Express Restoration - New Canvas
Hey Al! It's been a while. So it's on the water now!?! I'll have to visit your web page and catch up.

Looking good Al! :smt119
Nikasil allows for tighter ring seal, low friction, next to nothing break-in etc. Works good until repair time, then very $$ to repair. Not the choice for the common racer type that always modifying, running, blowing up stuff, repairing etc. Although if you have the...
Al! What's the latest? Give us an update!
We have since moved to the Pensacola area so I'm not going to be able to do surprise Q/A visits anymore
If the motor is hitting on all 8 I'd compare how much forward weight you have compared to the Larson. When it comes to top end speed bow weight will cut your speed big time.
Also, measure how much of your lower unit and prop are burried in the water compared to the Volvo. The Volvos look pretty...
Oh man you 're not kidding on the rain! I figured you'd taken some time off. I found two 390ECs, one w/ 502s just up the river and one with 496 Horizons just down the river (Ft Lauderdale). I am well familiar with the advantages of the diesel but I'll bet the 502 or 496 is approaching the torque...
Well that tells me that the female guest(s) you were hauling off to islands 40 miles offshore weighed more than 4 big guys + 3/4 fuel and water :smt043
(just kidding Pietro! Nothing like humor intended insults from the states heh?) So what would your female guests say to me in...
Oh man sweeeet! Looks like Al has been doing some moonlighting  Why don't you just come clean Al, that SW biz is just a front for liability reasons, you do 390 EC restoration for a living :smt043
Diesels too!

Deck Removal
Obviously no 5200 was used on that deck (It came off so clean) So much for running the blowers :smt101 They are soooo lucky!
Yeah no doubt an advantage of diesel power. I wonder if a distributorless ignition would've prevented that?

I've been using these ProMariner 20 chargers on two of my boats. I use Odessey AGM 2150 200ah batteries (2 on each boat) and these chargers bring them back from nearly door nail dead in a couple hours. The charger runs very hot but the entire board is potted in epoxy so it stands to reason (no...
Yes the Q-jet is the best carb out there. Very misunderstood though. Closest a carb will ever get to EFI. I always ran the ones from the late 70s/early 80s that had the extra externally adjustable low speed circuit that was accessible from the top. It made the bowl bigger also because they used...
I wouldn't mess with the carb untill you have a reason. It could be just fine and you may actually mess it up trying to do a rebuild on it. Unless you know them very well.
How bout the raw water pump in the lower unit?
