I am no expert in this area, but I have the same motor and had basically the same problem. Turned out to be an ignition sensor that is located inside the distributor cap. It is only like an $80 part that I think I spent about $800 on mechanics to finally find. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Was the water intrusion issue mainly with salt water boats? I am looking at the same era boats, but live inland where there are only freshwater boats. All of the ones I have seen still have the old style exhaust. So I am wondering if it was not such an issue out here where boats spent their life...
