MTR. If your outdrive still has the original MerCruiser decal on the upper gear case, have a look at the port side of the drive and it will have the gear ratio labeled as well. Who knows it could have been changed over the years. The only other way is to physically inspect the gears. I...
Guys,
He’s got a ton of prop slip. At 4,000 RPM (clean bottom, propeller in good shape, trimmed and etc.) he should be running around 35 MPH +/-, assuming he has the stock set of 1.62 gears.
Theoretical Speed = 4000/1.62 = 2469 RPM at the prop shaft. 2469 (19”) = 46,914”/12 = 3909’/5280 =...
SD,
You are welcome. I always thought this was a. extremely rare issue - perhaps not!
Enjoy your recent purchase and stick around as CSR had lots of good information.
You are right - very happy with it. She’s never left us stranded. The only frustrating issues to this point were tracking down a shift interrupt issue and replacing a coupler to solve a persistent gimbal bearing issue. She’s taken us all over our local lakes along with several trips on the SC...
Super nice and congrats. My neighbor has the same boat with the tower. Gets used about four or five times a summer. Ashame and it’s on lift, not a trailer.
6.2 liter in yours?
Ed,
I have the same boat/engine combination. I have owned nine since new. I have not had the same issue you are experiencing. Although, mine has always run slightly rich when cold. Let us know what you out.
Someone in SW Florida with a relatively new 270 SDX recently had the same problem. Marine Max took care of it. I do not remember the member’s name or the topic. He may chime in or someone else may be able to find the post.
Signature,
I had a similar problem years ago. Have a look at this post.

FYI, only Alpha Drives have a shift interrupt switch.
Another possibility - though not the same issues you described...
1990,
Single bunk setup, with the bunks sitting between strakes one and two. It looks like your bunks are sitting between strakes two and three. If so, your bunks will most likely come in contact with the “tabs”. Also, 230s with a small block have a base weight of 3800 lbs, big blocks with...
1990,
The 230BRs of our vintage also have a molded in “tab” along inboard side of the outboard strake. I suspect the “tab” is sitting along the aft portion of the bunk , thereby lifting this section ever so slightly off of the corresponding section of the bunk.
1990,
I have owned my ‘99 230BR since new. It also has a “wave” similar to yours along the aft outboard strakes. The bunks are flush with the transom. FYI, I have a Load Rite trailer with a capacity of 5400 lbs and 7000 lbs GVW - trailer weighs 1600 lbs. Our dealer used this trailer for the...
You should be able to find your gear ratio on the MerCruiser label located on the upper gear case. If not, contact Mercury with the serial number. They will have the info. Sea Ray should have the original build spec as well.
In the meantime, I would have a look at the prop chart for the 6.2...
Frank,
Nice meeting you so many years ago at Shell Island.
Just curious if any of these potential buyers will be worthy and be able to pass your interview.......:)
Strecker,
Have a look at the thread below. You symptoms are not identical, but the bouncing synch. gauge is suspicious, leading me to believe it could be a shift interrupt switch issue killing the ignition. Also could be problems with the coil wire, coil and etc...
