If any of you are following my other thread you might have noticed I'm trying to purchase a used 280. I’ve been overwhelmed with the amount of excellent information and support I’ve found on CSR so far, and since my pricing offer was rejected I thought I would seek a little additional advice.

As suggested in other "pricing question" threads I’ve looked up the value through the following site: http://www.nadaguides.com. I added the options the boat includes above the standard equipment, which comes out to be between $80K and $90K. Of course I placed my first offer closer to then lower end of this range, the current asking price is closer to the middle of that range and the owner didn’t budge much at all from the current asking price after rejecting my initial offer.

Maybe I am over thinking this too much but looking around at the current economy and the skyrocketing price of gas, I feel like I should have a bit more negotiating room here. Closer to the low end range of NADA value seems to me would be a reasonable offer.

Am I being too stingy here? Seems to be much more of a buyer’s market than a seller’s market, but maybe I’m asking for too much (or too little...)

Here is a quick list of what options the boat includes above the standard setup:
05 280DA
Twin 4.3 MPIs with Alpha drives
5kw Generator
Full canvas camper top
13" TV w/ DVD
Raymarine C70 w/ Radar
Custom bow pads
Windlass anchor

Any opinions on pricing for this configuration?

Thanks,

Sounds to me like youre buying from a private seller, not a dealership. If this is the case, a lot of the rules can go right out the window. Private sellers have a lot more going on then economics and fair values. He's probably concerned with things like his own pay off, his personal value of the boat, and of course, he's going to try to aim on the high end.

You could be doing everything right and he might not budge, doesnt mean youre doing anything out of the ordinary. Sounds to me like youre on the money if all things considered are correct. I would aim low too and wait for a counter offer. If he wont even counter, go find another seller, he's obviously not very interested in selling.

I didn’t think much about the importance of that, but the purchase is through a broker from a private seller.

The broker indicated to me that the current asking price is his payoff value, but I’m not sure how much I believe that. Even if that is true, logic dictates that he should consider the cost of NOT selling the boat. Even if he goes slightly under his payoff value, the cost of the note, insurance, and slip should still a factor into the equation. A small amount under the payoff value might actually save him money in the long run if the boat continues to sit there.

Or at that is my logic at least... I guess at the end of the day it is his boat and his money to decide.

After reading your first post, I was thinking his asking price is right at his payoff. He's not budging because he can't afford cash out of pocket in a large sum. If he could and he is smart, his payoff would be lower than that because he would've been paying more than the minimum monthly amounts. Move on, there are plenty of others out the to look at and it is a buyers market or so they say (I'll be making a thread about this soon)
Just an FYI, last June, I looked at an 04 280 equipped the same plus more and a triple axle trailer. Had him down to 76k on it before I got scared of trailering a 280 :smt021 Sure regret that decision. HTH SB

well he seems to be priced right. I would pay that for a 280 loaded like that.

(this is not my boat) but how about a 2005 SEA RAY - 260 SUNDANCER
Engine: Mercruiser 350 MAG 300HP
Engine Hours: 81

SHE HAS A KOEHLER GENERATOR WITH ONLY 15 HOURS AND HEAT AND AIR!! REMOTE SPOTLIGHT, POWER WINDLASS, STEREO REMOTE, AND VHF RADIO, TRIM TABS, BIMINI TOP(NO ENCLOSURE) FRESHWATER SINK IN COCKPIT, EXTENDED SWIM PLATFORM, TRANSOM SHOWER, TRANSOM STEREO CONTROLLER, DECK CARPET, BATTERY SWITCH.. AND MUCH MORE!!! ENCLOSED HEAD WITH VACU-FLUSH TOILET

No bottom paint......

so how much???

Ill post the asking price after a few guesses.....

Id say they are asking $58K.... but wont get it.

Last July (end of) the rep was here at the local dealer for a one day sales event. The new '07 280 with twins (no genny though), asking price was around $101k. I remember roughly running the numbers in my head and with the $7500 Sea Ray rebate, it was around 37% off MSRP. You might want to look at new?

But then again, I called for the hours of the fuel dock today and found out that gas is $4.29 a gallon and he said he's going to have to raise it soon... I wonder if I can get a sail!

I finally got the seller down on pricing to where I thought it should be. Did the seatrial and survey yesterday, and everything went well.

She appears to be in great shape! With a little luck, Ill have everything finalized next week.

Here's a pic of her out of the water for the survey.
