Having some issues with the optional Generator on my 260...It fires up fine, runs about 10 minuets the first time, and pumps water well, but sputters out and dies...Upon restart will run about half the time as the first...3rd or 4th restart will only give 30 seconds or so...It's still under waranty, but I won't be taking it in untill late October, and though someone may be able to give me some trouble shooting advice...

Based on reading this on other forums, the advice is normally to start with the easy stuff. In this case that would mean change the spark plugs.

I have no first hand experience in this.

Check the display on the unit for error codes. Some things that shut the genset down are oil pressure, high temperature, and faulty CO sensor (if it's a low CO unit). Like the previous post, check your plugs and also your fuel filter.

Also, I believe a low charge on the battery can be a problem source on the Kohler generators. Make sure your batteries are full and working OK.

As said before,

Batteries- LOAD TEST THEM!!!

Oil- Check the listed way

Coolant level- See above

make sure its getting enough water intake also.

Check the water level in the batteries. We have gotten so use too maintenance free batteries in our cars that we forget that on our boats. And believe me it can cause all types of strange problems.

On my 280DA, after replacing the impeller it did this. Funny thing is I had only replaced one spark plug. The generator has TWO. The other plug is completely on the other side of the engine. I stretched my arms out to the max and put in two new plugs. For now all my generator problems are history.

I had significant problems with my '06 generator.

Kohler changed the generator for this model year, and there have been 2 major problems, and I suffered from both, as i already have over 150 hours on my genset.

MAKE SURE YOU READ FOR THE ERROR CODE ON THE CONTROLLER DISPLAY.

First, I had error code EC72, which was a controller issue. Ultimately, the problem was a faulty relay that Kholer had to replace.

Second, I had over heating error codes and loss of coolant codes. These were a result of the new catalytic converter on this model. The converter is cooled by the sea water, however the holes were too small, and they get clogged up. Once they get clogged, the converter gets to hot, and the genset shuts down. Kholer has a modification for this which has a converter with larger holes so they don't get clogged.

In talking to the service tech here in Florida, this was becomming an issue with all the new gensets.

Let me know if this is what you find, if not, then i want to make sure i don't have what you have.

i would still call and get them to come out, since it is warranty they were making weekly visits to my house until they got the problems resolved.

I'll check out all of these this weekend...Seems like people have a lot of issues in general with generators, which seems ironic due to the huge added expense for picking up this option...
