1987 270 Sundancer: Converter operation question

The main Pwr Panel has a switch marked "Converter" and a pilot light that illuminates when the switch is "ON". What does this switch actually do? I'd expect it to provide AC power from the batteries when not running on shore power. Please, answer only if you know for certain.
