1988 18' Bowrider 3L Mercruiser Overvoltage

Hi all. The voltage issue on our 18' Seville Bowrider with 3L inboard Mercruiser is getting worse. When exceeding about 3500 RPMs the voltage spikes; the volt meter pegs to the right; and there is a bad squealing from the engine compartment. Taking the engine to idle usually stops this after a few seconds. Sometimes turning the engine off is necessary to reset whatever is wrong. This overvoltage problem is happening more and more.My opinion is that I need to replace the voltage regulator. However, I have only worked on motorcycle engines. So, I am looking for a sanity check here. Thoughts anyone???TNX

Rebuild or replace but by the time you have rebuilt it you can get a new one for under $100.00
