1989 340 DA, the Quicksilver 6.5 genny, with 88 hours, needs a timing belt. Can it be replaced as she sits or does the whole (in parts) engine have to be removed from the boat?
Many Thanks

I have a 6.5 westerbeke in my 340. I replaced timing belt, all hoses and exhaust manifold in place thru the aft cabin access panel and top deck access. It was not easy but definitely easier than removing the generator would have been.

88 hours in 23 years? If you can find a timing belt for it (there are several threads on this topic) it is a straightforward job. On your boat, depending on your physical size ......it will be tough to move around. My bigger concern is the rest of the generator. With such little use, other problems such as seals and bearings are just problematic.

The last one I saw that had 90 hours had to be replaced because the owner would go years without running it or changing the oil. You really have to use it on a regular basis.

In regards to the timing belt.....oftentimes the best solution is to remove the old one and get a parts shop to match one up. Gates and Dayco have on line databases for length, width and number of teeth.

Speaking of finding the replacement belt. Westerbecke belts are no longer available so I had to look elsewhere. Found out the engine on mine was the same engine used in the Chevy sprint, non exported Daihatsu truck and of all things a citroen. When all said and done the only belt available was for the Citroen via a ebay Great Britian seller that would not ship to US. All the large manufacturers could not match a belt because of the teeth shape. Fortunately I have some good friends in England. I bought, shipped to them and then they mailed to me.

Bottom line, you may not be able to easily find the belt. If you have a problem, try to find out who really made the engine (I know quicksilver did not" and go from there.

One thing I didn't say was make sure the valves did not get bent!!!! Did the belt break?
I believe the belt broke, dist. rotor does not turn as engine turns over.
I don't hear any bad noises when it turns over. How do you know for sure if valve got damaged
before cranking? Pulling the head?

Thanks to all for your input!

There are two types of engines with timing belts interference and non-interference. If it is a interference engine then you
will have valve and piston damage from a broken belt. Just guessing that yours is a 3 cylinder engine and assuming that it is a nissan, I looked up a 1988 engine. It is an interference design.

Take off the timing belt cover and see if it is broken. hopefully it is intact and you simply had a failure of the distributor shaft.
Try turning the rotor by hand. It should wiggle a little indicating that the shaft is not rust frozen but it should not turn indicating that it is still mated to the cam drive gear.

Actually it is a 4 cylinder. She was running fine, just died like flipping a switch. It is a Nissan, rotor barely wiggles which indicates it is still attached to camshaft.

Other than getting it timed right then do a quick compression test that would be the only way to tell. That would save you pulling the head. I had to pull my head. The genny has only 220 hrs on it. Oh if you ever need a fuel pump 380.00 from searay 49.00 Discount A/P and change the fittings for the fuel line.
