1989 340 DA, the Quicksilver 6.5 genny, with 88 hours, needs a timing belt. Can it be replaced as she sits or does the whole (in parts) engine have to be removed from the boat?
Many Thanks

I believe the belt broke, dist. rotor does not turn as engine turns over. One thing I didn't say was make sure the valves did not get bent!!!! Did the belt break?
There are two types of engines with timing belts interference and non-interference. If it is a interference engine then you
will have valve and piston damage from a broken belt. Just guessing that yours is a 3 cylinder engine and assuming that it is a nissan, I looked up a 1988 engine. It is an interference design.
Take off the timing belt cover and see if it is broken. hopefully it is intact and you simply had a failure of the distributor shaft.
Try turning the rotor by hand. It should wiggle a little indicating that the shaft is not rust frozen but it should not turn indicating that it is still mated to the cam drive gear.
