I have a 2007 185 with the 4.3 that I recently purchased (first boat). The boat runs great, but sputters and will die in the idle position. I've also noticed that there is a bit of play when moving the throttle lever before I finally feel some tension. Could the cable be causing the idle issue and if so, is there a way to adjust the cable to take up the slack?

Thanks,
Jake

The correct factory service manual will define the appropriate cable slack and adjustment.

The sputtering and stalling don't sound related to excess slack.

Mine requires a hand-held diagnostic computer to evaluate and adjust the engine. There are also other diagnostic tools required for evaluating fuel pressure.

There might be an idle screw ifin you're lucky.

Jake,

I may be way off base here but reading that I do have a question. When you say sputters and will die in the idle position. Are you saying that you turn the key off and then it sputters and will die (dieseling) or is this happening just from you going into the neutral position? I just want to make sure we understand the problem.

More data please! What RPM is the engine turning when you return the throttle to idle before it stalls? Does the sputtering seem like misfiring or a very slow idle?

I appologize for 1.) not giving the full information and 2.) not replying sooner.

The motor has the carb set up.

The sputtering and dying occurs when I return to the neutral position with the ignition still "on".

The reason I asked about the cable is that when I do place it in gear ("throttle only" button pushed) there seems to be a bit of play(about an inch) before I feel the tension in the cable and then an increase in RPMs.

I did not take not to the RPM when I place it in the neutral postition... darn it.

I hope this helps.

Is it hard to push the selector back into neutral? If so, the shift cable might be binding, which causes the shift ignition interrupter to cut the ignition for too long a period.

Best regards,
Frank

No, it actually seems a bit on the loose side.
