Hi All,
I sold our old Sea Ray, and am looking into getting back into a 220 or 230 Select. There is a nice 230 select near me, with ~200 hours - however from the photos, it looks like the outdrive has been replaced. I inquired with the owner, and he said that the entire unit was replaced due to the gimbal bearing failing. I feel that 200 hours is LOW for the gimbal bearing to fail. I am familiar with he gimbal bearing - and replacing them - but I have never heard of one failing before it gave lots of warning (noise).
Would a failed gimbal cause damage to the outdrive? What other things should I look at? Is it possible it would cause damage to the transom too? Seems like the u-joint on the outdrive input shaft would fail first in a scenario like this.
