3 step regulators

Have a aqualine 3 step 10-115 regulator, starting to cause me some grief with the alternators,, find that they are not charging, had one rebuilt, suspect that regulator may be at fault. Alternators are heavy duty 120amp, would there be a problem if I had regualtors put directly on the alternator themself.

The whole charging system has been modified by previous owner and is difficult to troubleshoot, this would be a simpler and more cost effective repair then trying to rewire in anothe expensive 3 step regulator.
