I sold my old '82 260 to a friend of mine last spring. He had some issues with hitting bottom a few times and damaged the lower unit. Actually put several gear teeth thru the casing. Anyway, he got a drive off of ebay that was an 800 Stringer, bolted right up, shifted and had a good waterpump. We installed it last fall and thought it was good to go. Today I get a call from my friend, and he says that when he turns the wheel right the boat goes left and visa versa. Then he looses all connection between the engine and prop. He brought the boat home and we pulled the drive. The upper has a broken waterpump shaft, thats why no drive. We swapped the old upper onto the ebay lower and it is now working and turns the way it should. My question is, WHY are some OMC 800 Stringer drives setup to steer opposite direction? This seems weird. We want to pverhaul the damaged upper and I want to know what I have to do to convert this drive to steer normally. Seems I read somewhere that the steering gear on some manual steering drives turns opposite that of powersteering drives.
Something to consider when replacing outdrives.
