just picked up a 1987 sea ray with a 3.7 mercruiser. this engine evidently doesn't have a alternator. It has some kind of funky charging system that runs off the crankshaft pulley? Got an estimate of aprox 600 dollars to fix. Can I just install an alternator by fabricating a bracket for it and completely disconnect the present charging system. Can anyone shed some light on this problem as I have never seen a charging system like this. thanx. wnk.
