Noob here with a 1996 230 Signiture Select Overnighter.

After I got the boat it had some electronic issues that I had fixed and it ran ok ( replaced the Board).
I changed out the plugs, gave it an oil change and went boating.

I was not happy with the hole shot soat the end of the boating season I changed props from a 3 Blade 21 Pitch to a 4 blade 17 pitch and was happy and also discovered that sea trial, that one cylinder was not working and heard a funny knock.

trailered my boat to a bigger dealer in the closest big city, Spokane WA.

here is the issue: the plugs I put in were too long. two of them had some stem missing and when they pulled the heads, a chunk of one went through the valve (ie no compression) so the heads were sent for machining, new stems installed and I should be golden. Thank goodness the pistons were okay!

Definition of my Boat: Hole in the water I throw my $$$, haha.

The good news tho was they informed me that the engine was brand new (thats why my boat had so few hours on it when i bought it @ 190hrs, I guesse).

Are the plugs different for a relatively new 5.7 vs a 1996 and if so, what else is different, so I don't do another Bonehead manouver! I should have compared plugs, when I took them out , but hey I am an accountant now and its been 35 years since I worked at a Garage!
Proof positive that a Lil' knowledge can be a scary thing!

I have budgeted to replace the Back to Back seat cushions, as the passenger front seat bottom is starting to split, so does anyone have a very rough idea what that should cost? or should i just replace the seat bottom that is splitting? This engine repair just took out a big chunk of my repair budget, but again I want to repair the proper way as well.

I also think I will take my boat to the Pro's for future maintenance. I would rather have it done right than get my hands dirty and still mess it up, haha!!

If you want to laugh at my expense , join in

GM went to a different style head for the 350 and others for the 1996 model year. These engines were fully implemented into MerCruiser's line up by '98 or thereabouts. So as you learned, it's important to get the correct parts. If you do any more work, I would suggest getting the MerCruiser Maintenance Procedures Manual which corresponds to the engine block serial number. You may also want to get a copy of the work order for the engine replacement as it could have been a short block, long block, or a complete engine. Could have been sourced outisde of MerCruiser as well.
