Hi Everyone,
I had a battery/charger issue over the weekend that I can not figure out, I'd appreciate any advice. Following is my battery set up:
- Port/House 2 batteries
- Starboard single
- Generator single
All three banks are hooked to a Pro Mariner 3 bank 40 amp charger.
At the beginning of the season I replaced the port/house batteries. This past Friday I noticed the port/house batteries were low based on the volt gauge in the cabin. The charger had bee on all week with shore power. Checked the charger and it was only putting out 3-5 amps. There was a loose connection on the port/house connection to the charger, the connection was tightened. Amps went up to about 10-15. We thought we had the situation fixed.
- Took a 30-45 min. ride out to a sandbar and the alternator was charging the battery between 12-14 volts.
- Fired up the generator and turned on the charger. Charger was putting out 30-40 amps. Ran the generator a couple hours.
- Ran 2 fridges, some lights and stereo, stayed on the hook over night. In the morning port/house batteries were almost dead.
- Ran the generator and charger for 4-5 hours, got ready to leave and had to use the emergency start.
- Got back to the dock, hooked up shore power and turned on the charger, was back to putting out 3-5 amps. I also ran the generator and tested the charge, same thing putting out between 3-5 amps.
I understand that with the loose connection the charger was not working efficiently and most likely the batteries were wore down pretty low. But the charger is not getting the batteries to full charge. Do I just need to give it more time to charge or do I have a problem with the charger? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike
