am i correct that the satellite tv needs to have the generator on to be working out at sea?

My Direct TV sat dish is DC powered, as are my converter boxes, but my TV's are AC, soooooo.......while I may have sat TV without the genny running, I can't watch it.

It is possible with an inverter to run the tv, and and a dc dish and receiver.

The answer to your question appears to be what you mean. To run your satellite antenna you only need DC service. The next question is what does it take to power your television, DC or 120 AC volts. If you need 120 you have to run the genny otherwise you could use your batteries

a lot of the new flat panel tv's (lcd or plasma) are 12 volt but have a transformer in your power cable so if you have a look at your transformer it will probably say 120 in 12volt out. If
you don't have this then you are buggered but if you do then you can connect directly to 12 volt by making your own power cable with a fuse in the middle ( probably 1 amp)

hope that makes sense

I hard wired my M1 stright to the glomax 12 volt, always powered up. Installed an inverter in back of the flat screen and always leave it on. We do not run the genny on the water unless the TV is on for more than 5-6 hours, if so just crank the genny for a while to recharge the batteries.

TV? Is boating that boring?

Wait til you upgrade to 30s range, have kids :smt100 and use the boat as a summer house.

This is how I would set it up as well. In fact all electronics I hook up to 12v. If something only comes with 120AC I use small inverter. But the idea is to avoid having dependency to run the genny in order to use your electronics and entertainment accessories.

Do you mean "always powered up" literally- or just that you have power to the control box?
If you have the control box turned "on" 24/7, I wouldn't expect the antenna to last very long. Remember this thing has moving parts- gyro and dish...

My M3 is DC powered and the flat panel is AC but I have a Xantrex inverter for the 120 volt side of my electrical panel.
We have the M3 tuner also plugged into the Aux. side of the Clarion stereo and run the XM radio channels that Direct TV broadcasts on the Clarion......
(ok, margaritas are now involved but I think this makes sense....at least in my mind)
