My mecahnic told me that these detectors have a limited life expectancy. He said 3-4 years max. I experienced the same issues. I replaced the detector.

Mechanics who make statements like this are unimformed. We have never had a detector fail. Mine are on their 5th season and still activate when there is a problem and they shut off when area is ventilated. Had the same experience with the 93 SR for 11 years. We test our house alarms every year and they are very reliable as well. I do know that smoke detectors can send false alarms when they get dirty. If your a/c filter needs cleaning and the fan sends dust throughout the salon, lint on the sensor needs to be cleaned off to avoid false alarms.

Life spans are limited, though they are getting better. If you consider the TVs Sea Ray puts in boats, I wouldn't trust these things as far as I can throw them. A few references.
