I noticed the other day after washing the boat that my forward hatch was leaking. This is the first time I have seen this and was wondering if anyone has had this problem. I would like to take the padding down in the forward salon roof to inspect it and was wondering if anyone knows how to go about doing that with out doing damage.

Thank you,

Bryan

Welcome aboard.

Yes, hatches leaking have been discussed a few times. I'd advise against taking down the headliner. You can find a lot of info on this subject by using the search tool. Here's one to get you going: http://clubsearay.com/forum/showthread.php?t=23154&highlight=hatch+leak

You should figure out where it is leaking from by using a hose, set on a good, solid "rain" type setting. In other words, don't blast full bore right at the seal. Although, it should hold up to that, it's not a good simulation.

Just finished up my 3rd season with my newly purchased SeaRay and already the forward hatch had leaks and both fixed skylights developed leaks as well. Not real happy with SeaRay right now.

I am going to watch this thread and the one in the link above. Might be something I need to check on also?

Start with the simple stuff first, check the screw that goes through the handle to make sure that it hasn't loosened up. I thought mine was leaking around the frame, and it turned out that water was following the screw, then running along the top of the handle to the groove in the frame where the plastic ear on the handle engages it. The water was dripping down from the inside front corner of the frame.

I applied silicone grease to the gasket and tightened the screw in the handle and it fixed my leak. The gasket was somewhat hard and brittle around the outside edges. It was much easier than I feared. I will probably replace the gaskets over winter.

Get on it asap. If its the gasket between the hatch and the frame no big deal, adjust or get a new seal. If its leaking between the hatch frame and deck then get it fixed now before you get the coring wet.

I concur about fixing top hatch leaks ASAP! The damage can go beyond the core, to include mold on the back of the headliner, mold and wood damage on hull side panels etc.

A quick fix is to seal the outside of the hatch with silicon that can be easly removed. The best fix is to remove the hatch and rebed same with a long life caulk, not an adhesive.

Sea Ray used the worst possible type of seal in some models/hatches, that being double side adhesive foam tape! This however is easly removed and the job is fairly easy to do.

Good Luck
