It’s amazing how much entertainment value can be found in a crowded harbor anchorage area on a Labor Day weekend and at no additional charge. Late Sunday evening on our way back from Oxford, we decided to drop the hook in St. Michaels behind the Maritime Museum. In about an hour it became dark with a little wind and then the fun began.

A 29’ Rinker broke loose and tangled rode’s with a 32’ blow boat. When they tried to raise their individual windlasses, the result was to join them more intimately together at the bow to the point where they were banging with each wave swell. After the deployment of several fenders, they ended up spending the night together as an impromptu raft up. In the AM the snarled anchor chains were freed and they departed after exchanging a few curt phrases that included words like “damage, insurance, settle up†– and the like.

Also shortly after dark, a raft of four boats broke loose and came drifting by with very panicky captains and crew. The conversations on board went something like, “What do we do, hurry up raise the anchor, everyone start their engines, should we break apart the raft?†They managed to use the large sedan anchor boat to pull back the group and reset the anchor with what looked like a lot more scope.

In the early AM, after taking the dog to shore and making some coffee, I decided to sit on the bow, not wanting to miss any more of the show. Thankfully, I was not to be disappointed. Directly in front, about 20 yards, a blow boat captain was removing his dink engine and then attempted to stand and step to his stern ladder. When he had one foot on the dink and one on the ladder with the engine in one hand, the dink moved further away and he ended up in the water holding the engine, which then became an effective anchor. At this point, I jumped up ready to do my best Johnny Weissmuller imitation and save this poor soul. But then a hand came slowly up, like at the end of the movie Deliverance, and grabbed the dink. I asked if he needed assistance, which seemed obvious, but he said no and then went under again. His frantic wife said yes please help. So, I took my dink over and grabbed the engine he was still holding and pulled him up onto his boarding ladder totally exhausted.

Anyone else see any fun stuff this weekend?

I took a trip south to Sandy hook and spent a couple of days on the hook. we went to sleep to songs of Scottland as a boat down a bit broke out the bag pipes and played a few songs for everyone on anchor. In the morning I saw that a boat was draggin anchor and a naked guy running around the boat trying to figure out what to do first before he hit the rock wall, put some pants on or start the engines.

No funon the lake for us... just the usual crowd of complete boating ID10Ts ... towing their kids on a tube across the main channel in front of large cruisers on plane. I swear there were a few the should have gotten thrown in jail for a night to make a point. I cannot believe the Labor Day crowds and they are the worst of all annual holidays. Good thing is ... now it's over and the lake pretty much belongs to the people who know how to handle boats for the remainder of the year ... :smt013

Let' see....I witnessed 5 jetskis, riding two up jumping the wash at the stern of a tow boat....had one fallen off, their life jacket would have served as an aid in finding the body. More fools towing kids on a very busy main channel.

On the cool side of things, we ran side by side with a 48 Sedan Bridge at 35 mph for a few miles. We don't see many boats that size running that fast in our water.

Saw a nice rack...but it was on a buck taking an early morning drink while we were at anchor.

I know what you mean. I am looking forward to some less busy boating. I saw several boats cut right across a very busy channel opening on plane with no regard to all of the boats coming in or out. People were swerving all over the place to miss them. Absolutely no reason for him to be that close and on plane.

Then don't get me started about all of the fishing boats circling inside the channel with 10,000 lines in the water and trying to miss them.

The marina was great and I am looking forward to going back out on the lake with a little less traffic.

We do our boating here on eastern Long Island. Anyone who has traversed the Shinnecock Canal while the gates are open can attest to the Wickedness of the water running threw. On Sunday at about 4PM we travelled South to North threw the Canal. It was an attention getting ride to say the least but for us it was against the current which is easier. We have a 25" Sundancer with a 454/300HP pushed with a Bravo III.
Some folks Chickened out but at too late an interval to save themselves. We saw two go broadside to the fleet and get swept off downstream against thier wishes. It was kinda like parking at the local boat ramp on a Holiday. Al W.

All the fun I saw was on the beach - after dark, and no boats were hurt in the process (that firework went in between, I'm sure). A good time was had by all.

Several pair of underwear went missing Sat night sometime around the fireworks display   . Hope they didn't find their way into a water intake :smt089

What a week end here in Milwaukee, Not a cloud to be found. The L-Dock holiday party was in full swing when a newbe to our dock in a 40+ bridge boat took off for his 3rd venture. The dock and the stern post kept him from doing any damage as he pulled out with his party. Once on his way all was well. We continued to increase the libations on the dock and before long went to help our fellow dock mate back to the dock. It was soon realized two boats can not fit in a slip and several more attemps were made before we had a crowd of people barking comands to the new skipper. Sevaral ropes were thrown and human power eventualy brought him in. He never did come out and join in the festivities. The evening ended with a fine water ballet show with two naked swimers and a lot of spot lights shining. Living the deam man!

I stopped at a floating restaurant (the Rockmore) for a little while on Sunday while I was out and about with my family. I watched a 25'-ish Rinker plow into another boat while attempting to dock. Apparently, the captain thought that one of his buddies could simply jump from his boat to the dock, tug on his bow line, and bring a 7,000 pound boat to a stop on a dime. I cringed as the Rinker's anchor tore into the upper portion of a brand new Yamaha 225 OB. I can only imagine how much that little boo boo will cost to fix.

Until I get a bigger boat, I won’t even consider going out on holidays anymore. I went out on the 4th of July a couple years ago, and that was enough for me.

Well, this past labor day wasn't the usual weekend on the water for us... Sat. Had to spend most of the day at home, had Surround sound installed on the new TV. Went out Sat. evening to spend the rest of the weekend aboard. Upon arrival I found a note in the control box of the boat lift stating that a couple was interested in the purchase of my boat. Called them Sun. morning to set up a time for viewing. They showed up Sun. afternoon around 2:30, so we spent the next three and a half hours showing the boat.

After the dog and pony show we put on for them we dropped them off where we picked them up and returned to the dock to eat... Microwave woudn't work(as mentioned in a different thread) Ended up going out for dinner. Got up Mon. and had a great day on the water, except for worrying about what was wrong with the microwave, and dealing with water at flood stage.

Upon arrival at home on labor day evening noticed a measage on the answering machine... Sold my boat...

I guess I'll be cleaning out the boat this weekend, with my boating season over for the year... :smt089

Your boating season could be continued for another couple of months with a 2002 300DA....

I wish... I'd have no place to put it right now...

Don't want to highjack...

Back to the entertainment. :smt001

i got a real late start on sunday (noon, which is WAY too late for around here) and i spent the next HOUR muttering to myself, "this is EXACTLY why i dont leave the dock this late." i was smack dab in the middle of amatuer hour(s). to wickeral above, i admire your courage going through a CANAL on a holiday. i would never venture through our wonderful canal (point pleasant) on any weekend, let alone labor day weekend! i had to muster all my abilities to avoid first all the yahoos trolling around the gas dock, including the guy hanging onto the boat in the last slip next to the gas dock, who was blocking 1/3 of the passageway OUT of my row of slips. then it was through the bottle-neck no wake zone, then under the no wake mantoloking bridge, both of which look like the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway during the morning rush.

no single event was impressive, but what i did notice was the OVER ABUNDANCE of seemingly overloaded small boats, and the incredible amount of people dangling off foredecks and bowrails of boats underway, as well as the lack of police presence to educate (and ticket) these dim-wits.

barnegat bay is always an adventure on any give fine summer day, but this weekend was by far the most wretched display of bad boating i've seen in my 30something years i've been boating. :smt100

Went out Sunday in Knoxville/Ft. Loudon, and it was surprisingly uncrowded. We didn't set out until 3pm, and the channel wasn't significantly more crowded than your average June/July weekend.

As you leave our marina, we all have to choke through under a bridge, and *normally* boats will keep their wake down if another boat is passing through in the other direction. Nope, not this weekend. Almost got shoved into the bridge by an overloaded deck boat, but I was sure the would end up beaching their prop that fine afternoon.

The blow boat story was really disturbing...
