Hi all,

95 250 DA. My fuel gauge seems to have packed up, it's reading empty even though I know I have half a tank of fuel.
When I put the ignition on I can see the needle kicks downwards (below empty)

any info much appreciated.

Tony.

Most likely the sending unit has failed. Check for power at the sending unit, if power is present, supply a ground to the power wire on the fuel tank sending unit and watch the gauge at the same time the gauge will go to full if the sending unit is bad.
If there is no power, then you need to trace down the supply wire and locate the break in supply.
Good Luck
Kevin

Thanks Kevin, I'll do that, would it be worth taking the sender unit out, could it get stuck at all?

If you've got one of the run-of-the-mill senders, and if it's original, the little cork float is probably disintegrated or saturated with fuel to where it won't float- hence the empty reading.

Easy to replace.

short wire what goes to sender to the ground (base of sender is OK) and if your gauge goes all way up - replace sender, if not - you may have broken sender wire or bad gauge

Thanks for the info guys, I'm down there tomorrow I'll give it all a go.:smt001

Did the checks, n yep it's definitely the sender unit.:smt038

I sent searay.co.uk an email regarding ordering one gave them part number as well. I have had no reply yet 36 hours later.

To be honest I've not had any luck with the so called sea ray agents in the uk.
I contacted another a while back about a bimini frame, never heard a thing back except for a brochure about new boats. :smt021

Thanks tobnpr, the links very helpful, I'll order one.

Cheers.
Tony

Ordered the Defender sender unit, $30 for the unit - $42.30 to get it shipped to uk.:wow:

I've got a full tank at the moment so I'll be able to tell how accurate....... I think!

it is much easier to installed sender with empty (almost) tank.
with full tank there is always a chance of fuel spill and when tank is full sender floats ans prevent from setting it in correct position - it only fits one way

Installed the new sender unit, Teleflux defender, quite straight forward with good clear instructions, and very accurate too. Thanks for the link tobnpr. and thanks for the help guys,
much appreciated.

Thanks for letting us know that it worked out.
Wow- that shipping charge sure sux- no retailers (even online ones) for boating supplies in the UK?

So...how much does that full tank of petrol cost you over there?

The shipping was expensive, it came in a 2.5 foot box.
Couldn't find any retailers for the uk, but anyway I thought I'd be safer as it's an American boat to go with the tried and trusted product from the states, that way no confusion about compatability etc.

Full tank 265 litres so works out at £288 / $477.80
