I seem to have developed a leak in one of the hoses that are in the back of the cool fuel filter. It's hard to trace where these two hoses go. Does anyone know where they end up and how they are routed. I have not determined what is leaking but the seawater is running down the hose and dripping off the body of the cool fuel filter. There also doesn't "feel" to be any hose clamps on the hoses that enter the body of the fuel filter? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Rich

You can see the two hoses in question in this photo I took some time back when the engine was out of my boat.

There are no clamps on those hoses (that's the way Mercury makes it) and when I asked our Mercury Techs about it I was told they are so tight you don't need them. In fact, if you have to remove them, I was told you will have to cut them off.

Can you tell where the leak is coming from for sure? I don't know if this applies to you or not, but if water is left in the Cool Fuel units over the winter you risk freeze damage. Our Marina has apparently had to replace several Cool Fuel units because folks didn't winterize properly. Just make sure it is the hoses and not the Cool Fuel unit itself before doing anything.

These units are susceptible to corrosion and leaking. Your boat's age is about right. I was lucky to not get this version on my boat.

Thank you so much for your reply and pictures. The clarity of the picture really helps me with wher the hoses are going. At first, I did think the water was coming from the filter housing -- but I dismissed it. I will have to check again.
Any idea what the unit costs?
Thanks for your response

I think the Cool Fuel Unit housing itself is pretty expensive. (Our dealer had mentioned the average cost to me but I don't remember what it was only that I thought it was costly). Don't forget that the Cool Fuel unit houses your fuel pumps in addition to the fuel filters so you would have to disassemble the old one (something I have not done myself) to remove the pumps and filters for instalation in the new unit. I suppose you could first try hose clamps to see if that works but I have a feeling it won't. There are more pictures of the cool fuel unit in this posting in our Maintenance Forum. http://clubsearay.com/forum/showthread.php?t=27133&highlight=cool

Getting your head down to the cool fuel to check it out is not a fun job believe me I know. As Dave said now hose clamps on them and they do have to be cut. If it was not properly winterized they bust easily good luck.
