I am not getting any tv stations on my tv. Everything I can see is connected and I have the gain set to the highest possible level. I am in close proximity to several tv stations. My question is, does the original antennae installed on the boat receive the signal sent over air today? Meaning does anything need to be converted to digital in order to get some channels?

also, I have a cable connection for shore use. Is there a selector switch for ship or shore that I may be missing?

The Glomex will pick up Digital stations. The Sharp TV in your boat is not Digital TV ready so you will need to either purchase a converter or a new TV.

Thanks Jason that's what I was suspecting. The converters I am seeing all require 110 power...do you have a particular one that you would reccomend? Perhaps one that is 12v or that doesn't need power. The other option I was considering was upgrading the tv with a newer one in the same size...I also wanted hdmi so I could use an ipad or something.

To answer your second question, there is not a switch per se to switch between shore and antenna. The Glomex "dial" is your switch. Turn it all the way to the left (counter-clockwise) and it will click. That far left position switches you to shore (cable) input.

The PO of my boat had a small West Marine inverter installed behind the TV and used that to power a small Digital converter. I still use this setup. My DVD player has since died (extremely common with the KEC units) so I am planning to remove the TV, converter, inverter and DVD then replace with a new 12V TV that has built in Digital TV tuner, built in DVD player and RCA and HDMI inputs for my satellite box. Much less clutter.

I would recommend you go that route as opposed to wiring in inverters and converter boxes. Be sure to get a 12V TV or you will be back with an inverter. There are a handful of 12V TVs out there most under $200. Many of them have been discussed here on other threads. I was looking at an RCA brand.

FYI- Any TV you find now will not fit in the TV "hole" like the Sharp does. They will all be wider than the cut. Just plan that you will need to probably shim out the mount some so you can still secure the TV shelf.

Since 2009 broadcast TV has been digital (ATSC standard). You might still be able to find a converter box, but it is probably just time to upgrade your TVs, they are cheap enough now. Your Glomex will work fine with the new TV.

From Wikipedia:

  1. Under the Digital Transition and Public Safety Act of 2005, full-power broadcasting of analog television in the United States would have ceased after Tuesday February 17, 2009.

Update: Bought digital converter box at BEST BUY. I now get 50+ channels. Most are in Spanish but at least I get all the local channels. I was very impressed with the picture quality on the original tv.

What was the model number of that converter please?

Insignia model #NSDXA2. It was the only one they had in stock...there is nothing special or specific about it. M

Thanks. I'll order one off their site. I need to do the same thing.... Thanks!
