I do about 50% on my boating with my 8yr old son, he loves just hang with me and boating... Well, the other day my wife, daughter and son were on the boat, we had just anchored and suddenly there was a school of bunker jumping all around the boat. I get my rod out and start casting off of the swim platform and I snag a bunker, hand the rod to my son and he reels the fish in with great excitement. The fish now have moved more toward the bow and I try an position myself for another cast but was not paying attention to the end of the platform. I find myself in the water, I look up from the water and find my wife and 15yr old daughter laughing there heads off... I suddenly see my 8yr old son pushing the girls to the side and in his hand is a "Safety Ring" which he had removed from under one of the seat cushions and was ready to throw to me, his face showed concern but not panic.
He and I have gone over this scenario verbally many times when we were alone... WHAT IF's... And I want to say I was very proud of him and to see that he WAS paying attention!!!
I lost my favorite rod, cell phone dead...and scared the bunker away…
But I learned that my son can handle a MOB situation.
Just a reminder to those of you who boat with children, they should know what to do in the event someone is overboard...
They will Listen.
