My home PC has started to give me an annoying problem. It keeps kicking up a "Enter Network Password" screen. This screen has 3 boxes. Server, User & Password. I enter my password & click on OK, but this same window keeps popping up. I have rebooted the computer and have done a complete security scan on it looking for viruses, etc. It did not find any problems, yet this same condition exists.

what operating system?
what is it saying the password is for?
Take your PC offline until you figure out what it is!!
If you use this same password for other access, change those passwords immediately
Never saw a password screen asking for server name—probably is malware
From another PC go to www.malewarebytes.com and download their free tool.
Save the tool to a USB drive and bring it to the infected PC
Run the tool. AGAIN, keep your PC offline
Running the toll will take a few hours
From another PC, let me know how you are doing.

Sounds like you've forgotten your password! Have you been drinking?

Just kidding there. But seriously, when stuff like that happens to me anymore, I'm loading up the system fix all disc and reloading the whole thing. cheers ...hny ...Ron

BonBini is correct on system restores but you need to rescue your data first (pictures and etc.)

However, I have never seen any logon screen asking for a server name so still take the PC off the internet until you clean things up, rescue data and system restore it--I do system restores about once a year.

Sorry guys. The "Server" & "User" boxes were already filled in correctly. The "Password" box is filled full of x's. I remove the x's, enter my password, check the box to "Save this password in your password list" box and click "OK".

The problem still exists.

I have been running Windows Vista Ultimate on this computer since it came out without any problems.

Is this for Outlook by any chance? If it is, your login credentials are obviously incorrect, or there is an issue with the mail server at the moment. Because the server isn't communicating correctly with your computer, everytime it sends/receives new mail, the message pops up.

Sounds like malware. Upgrading to Windows 7 is a step in the right direction, but if you don't want to do that, I recommend going running Windows Live security scan. I have had good luck cleaning up friends computers using this tool.

Good luck,

(PS, be careful of the passwords you have entered, if it is the same password that you use for banking or other important sites, I would change those passwords ASAP)

Good luck

Thanx for all of the suggestions everybody, but the problem has mysteriously corrected itself. It has not reared its ugly head at all today.

My original advice still holds.. Run Live security scan and change any banking passwords if they are the same.

Since it was an outlook request, it was probably due to a server issue like I mentioned before. Once it's fixed on the email server end, the request on your end disappears.... just like it did in this case.
