I bought a new switch, same outcome. I guess I have to trace back the ground wire if that in fact is what is used to illuminate the light switch!
Or, just jumper a temporary ground from a known "good" ground location to your switch and that will tell you if your switch ground is bad...
I keep a couple of "jumpers" in the toolkit- around a 6' length ea. of red and yellow 12 ga. wire with alligator clips on the ends. Easy to bring power or ground from a different location to the device you're trying to troubleshoot.
