Intermittant Stalling

I have a 1998 Searay 330 Sundancer. Recently the port engine will stop intermittantly. It might happen once in an hour, sometimes never. When it happens I move the gear shift back to neutral and will be able to start the engine. Sometimes I put it back to nietral and attempt to start it and I get no audible sound and engine will not start. If I play with the gear shift it always restarts. Any ideas of what I should check for? Thanks in advance for the help

You did not indicate if you had outdrives or shaft drives. If you have out drives, you might have a problem with the shift interupter switch. Please update your signature with this information.
