iPad as MFD?

Great thread. I have a quick question. My iPad does not have the cellular service. Only WiFi. Can I use a Navionics? If not is there an add on I can use? Thx

iPads without Cellular do not have the GPS hardware, because the GPS and cellular radio are part of the same chip. You can get one with cellular capabilities, but do not have to sign up for a cellular service in order to use the GPS. Without the cellular/GPS hardware, you'd have to connect it up to an external Bluetooth GPS.

I upgraded our MFD in the spring with a Lowrance Live with the Navionics Platinum Micro SD. Also have the latest Navionics app for my Iphone.
The phone app does not have near the accuracy that the MFD does in these parts as far as underwater depths and structure go if that is of any importance. The MFD sonar is always within a few ft (tidal) of the charts while app is often off as much 20% and lots of the contours (humps) are missing. As far as above water navigation goes, the charts have no noticeable difference.
Am looking to add an Ipad for portability and an additional screen for on and off the boat but will have it paired to the MFD through wifi for full functionality of it and the better accuracy.
