Is this a gimmick item or possibly useful?

Don't know about this particular item, but engineering logic would say that a magnet would only attract iron, steel or nickel particles or shavings that might be suspended in the oil. If your engine has a problem causing it to shed ferrous particles internally, it probably needs immediate attention such, and possibly a rebuild.
