I guess the previouse owner installed rod holders in the side walkways (for lack of the proper term), one port, one starboard without proper sealant (or any at all?) Upon further inspection, I can see now why they tried to seal over one of the holes. The wood below wouldn't have even come close to hoding a screw. Both sides, rotted away.

Sorry to hear that. Please take lots of pics for us as this is probablly not an uncommon thing on our vintage boats. Hope I don't have to do that to mine. Look at where the wires from the arch go thru the side deck walkarounds. Mine had some locallized rot at the hole where water traveled down the wires and wicked into the plywood. I cut out the bad areas (about the size of a shoe box lid) and installed new wood and glass from underneath. PIA job at that.

The "good" thing about these types of repairs is that they can be done from underneath- no cosemetic gelcoat repairs. If the wood's totally rotted, the repair's much easier - it's when it's half-rotted and has to be chiseled/ ground out that it's a bigger pita...
