Maintenance is harder when you’re old..
Engines
Twin Mercruiser 340 inboards
Engine calls for 6.6 qts (7 Lt) for oil/ filter change. The dipstick read between 1 quart low and full.
Put my pump hose down the dipstick pipe and only sucked out 4.3 Lt.
Iwas not able to remove the filter yet.
I’m wondering if, because the boat is not level the oil is not falling into the sump? Or will taking the filter out allow more oil to return to the sump?
The dipstick housing is attached to a 90° elbow, so the extractor pump suction hose is all the way to the bottom..

thanks in Advance.

You likely won't get all the oil out. But it sounds like you got just about half. Was the engine warm? If it's your first go round, record your numbers so you know what to expect and see if you can get improvement on the next one. You may be surprised on how much it takes without moving the level.

Yes we warmed up the engine.

One engine down, one to go
and yes, removed all but about a qt of oil from the pan.
thanks for the tips.

Interesting to see different results on using the dipstick tube. I've done that on many small and big blocks - a few times I actually measured the difference after sucking it out by then draining through the oil pan plug. All that was left was about 6 or 8 ounces. Results each time were consistent so I stopped measuring. But I do take notice to what is sucked out and it is always consistent. The dipstick tube goes practically to the bottom of the pan.

Getting slightly off topic I bought oil filters yesterday for the Cummins and they were more then double….. how the hell is that possible?

I use an old straight spark plug boot and attach it to my pump tube and the top of the dipstick tube. It draws about everything out.

I have a feeling some folks are burning oil through the season but chalk it up to "pump didn't get it all" during oil changes...
