Am i doing something wrong. I have a 1979 sundancer. Single control for the throttle and the gear shift.

Reading on of the other posts, made me go back and check mine. When i push the button on the throttle the engine does rev up as it should, when i bring it back to neutral the button pops out but i cannot push either way on the throttle to where the transmission engages, am i doing this wrong? I have not had it in the water and will not until spring. What can i do? Also do they make a replacement twin throttle for this boat>|?

Thanks

Is there a lever under the top of the throttle to raise to get over the hump and into gear?

Hope this does'nt sound stupid but are you pushing the button back in to shift?

I know this may sound stupid but are you pushing the button back in to shift?

To me nothing sounds stupid. No i am not pushing the button back in, if i do that the only thing it does it to rev up the engine. I would have thought that it would have had a release button on the shifter to change gears but it is just the ball on top, does anyone have one of these old boats that has this shifter on it, i would like to know if i am doing something wrong before i tear into it and replace something that does not need it.

If you have any more ideas and questions, i will gladly take them regardless if they seem stupid or not i need help on it.

By the way i did start the boat and try to shift it into gear with the engine running, still nothing, where are the cable hook up, maybe i can unhook them and see if i can do it manually from the back.

Nope; you're doing it right. I've got the same boat. Push the button in to rev it out of gear and it should pop back out in the neutral position. There definitely is a problem if it won't go into gear.

Thanks for the reply, i am hoping the cables are frozen, i need to get them unhooked from the tranny to see if that is the problem, it is nice to know that i am not the only one with this boat, i will keep you informed.

Well, i went out and disconncted the cable running rom the throttle/shifter, and it is not frozen, the cable still slides smooth, i disconnected the cable that runs to the tranny, it will not go into gear even manually. I did notice that this thing run off of hydrollics from the main hydrollics pump? If so that may be my problem. When i bought this boat somone had stolen the batteries, and left cables and wires hanging loose, i did get somone to reconnect the batteries, but for some reason the tilt trim does not work, i am thinking this all may be related.

Back to the cables, when i unhooked the cable from the tranny and left the shifter hooked up, the throttle did move forward all the way, so at least that is not the problem, my shifter seems to be ok.

Based on your troubleshooting so far I'd be willing to bet you have a seazed shift cable going down into the foot. Unfortunately the drive must be removed to replace that but it is not a terribly hard job but time consuming. The tilt is also indicative of a boat that has been sitting for quite a while. When working on mine I always used a little home made remote switch so I can work the pump from outside the boat. the best results can be gained by using a pretty heavy duty spring loaded (1,0,1) or single pole double throw toggle. 12VDC to the common (center) contact and then route the other two leads to the up and down solenoids on the pump. Just make sure to hook up to the solenoids and not the pump leads. That would draw too much current and burn up your test switch. But you need to start just like you did with the shifter. If the pump runs in both up and down using your test switch then the shifter wiring is suspect. If the pump runs and the rams don't move up or down you have one of any number of very unpleasant problems. If the pump runs and the drive tries to do (anything) just remove the pin that runs through the end of the rams and see if just one is stuck and the other moves. Cymers or Seloc manuals give great descriptions of these problems. If you don't have them get them you'll be needing them soon enough. Good Luck. I owned an 84 SR Cuddy Fisherman for 13 years so I know all about these messes ;-).

Well finally i got it working, by sliding it back and forth and using a lot of grease, to lubricate it, but the problem not is when i was prying it and pulling the cable, i broke off the top part of the shifter arm assembly. Does anyone know where i can locate one?" thanks for all your help.
