I have a manual head also.
Where did you find the fuse for your Tank Level Indicator. Mine doesn't light at all. I was going to try changing the float, but that doesn't seem to make much sense until I at least have something that lights on the indicator.
I just always pump out whenever possible to make sure I don't fill it up, but I'd rather get the Indicator working if possible. I even fill it with fresh water to the top before I pump out so that maybe things will cleanup in there before I ever have to take that float out.
BTW: My Macerator comes on with no problem when I turn the key, although I've never used it because I stay inside the bay. I bent my lazy butt over, and you're right. The second toggle on the side of the sink is for the shower pump.
