I have a 2000 280SS with the factory norcold.

Since I bought the boat the fridge worked fine whether it was plugged into the shore or with the rocker switch on and running off battery. My battery charger is broken but the fridge worked on shore power OR battery regardless. Also, I have flipped the breaker and made sure the main power and the fridge breaker is on…..it is working fine.

My batteries ran down the other day and ever since, the fridge won’t run when on shore power. It runs fine when I have the switch on and running off of batteries but not shore power….which sucks because all of my beer gets warm/cold/warm…you know. Not sure what the problem could be.

Some Norcolds are DC only. Check which is installed. Once sure it's dual voltage, check that the AC breaker for the refrigerator is on and plugged in. Assuming that is all OK, then the voltage converter on the refrigerator is bad. It's field replaceable, but a bit costly.

Best regards,
Frank

There is a 120 VAC to 12 VDC step down transformer that is part of the electrical section of your fridge. Either the transformer itself, or the one of the connections has given up on you. Pull your unit out of the cabinet. If your set-up is anything like ours there will be a 120 VAC duplex outlet mounted under the galley cabinet that the above mentioned transformer is plugged into. From there, check the primary and secondary sides of the transformer with a voltmeter to see where the fault is. Chances are the transformer just shot craps on you. If so, just collect the nomenclature off the transformer and purchase a like replacement.

Cheers,

Jim

Go with the simple fixes. It plugs in. Check the plug. CHECK THE GFCI circuit that the fridge is protected by. That would be my guess. Check to make sure other appliances work in the plug, or not.

John,

Had a similar problem with a Norcold unit a few years back. Check to make sure AC power is reaching the unit. If so, the power module on the fridge may be bad. I took the fridge out on my boat and took it to a Norcold dealer who repalced the module. Been fine ever since.

I agree with John,

This thing plugs in. The 120V is not hard wired. It may be hidden inside a cabinet that is difficult to access but it does exist.

Unplug it then plug it into an extension cord that you know has power. Now does it work?

I had mine come unplugged on our last boat. It was not all the way out, just backed out about ¼”

I have a 2000 280SS and glad to see a fellow 280SS owner here on the Bay. I was going to suggest the GFCI and hard wire but others have all ready done that. Welcome to the board.:smt001

It was the GFI in the head. Thanks guys...you were right. I should have gone there first.

Yeah! Do I get a green thumb, or a square thumb, or a thumb's up or whatever?
