I am deep into my pre-splash project. As I've said in another post I am replacing u-joints, gimbal bearing, shift cable, trim senders, water hose, gear lube hose, all bellows, impeller, swivel shaft, removing gimbal ring for repair, & sanding and painting outdrive. I have been at it for a few weeks and have it all tore down. I sent the gimbal ring to J&R marine for repair. I just finished replacing the u-joints and gimbal bearing. It wasn't too bad. I have been taking pics and will post the entire process when I am done. On another note, we looked at a slip today and I am considering slipping the 290 this year instead of trailering every weekend.....I am trying to justify (in my mind) the $2500 for the slip !:smt013

Looking forward to the pics.
As far as justification for the slip....

More time onboard, less time pulling, launching, loading, parking, etc.
Less wear (& fuel) on the truck.
Insurance break for not trailering?
Less wear & tear on the gen.

These are just what came into my head. I decided early in my boat buying process to slip. I wouldn't have it any other way.

I like your "justification" list. We are hoping to make some "boating" friends and the marina is nice with a restaurant & bar.I'm not going to like the extra $1.00 a gallon for marina gas though.

Im sure that is a valid point. Keep looking for items to add to your justification list & Ill bet you'll be OK. Any trailer related expenses? Tags, Ins, maintenance? Any chance your slip is covered? Ive got to believe that cuts down on cleaning upkeep expenses.

Last year, & Im sure forever, we spend more time on the boat, in the slip than we do out on the water. Ive seen from your posts that you spend nights on the hook. No great demand for that with us (on our smaller 250). We just return to the slip plug in & start cooking, fishing, whatever. We enjoy the marina & atmosphere & love being able to leave things on the boat or in the dock box rather than hauling crap back & forth from the house to the boat.

Funny thing is, I put electric brakes and all new tires on the trailer last year...LOL.....but I am ready to try "marina" life.

I keep my AJ in a covered slip year round. Don't even pull it out in the winter. I just put heaters in it during the colder months. I can use it all year round, and stay on it whenever I wish.

I chose a covered slip due to the boating community I am in. Lots of good friends, and good times. No need to drive after having to many drinks on the pier, or the bar. I pay $3700 a year for mine, but that is a lot cheaper then a DWI in the long run.

None of the marinas on our lake have covered slips...that would be great.

Lots of variables there good luck, I've seen pics of the drives of boats left in the water. Looks pretty bad. However I can understand the desire to have her in a slip.

I hear you about the justification......my decision hinges on $7600 for the season though!!!!!!!! And work is slow, damn it!

$7600?...I feel better already !

Slip the boat. By the first weekend you will be saying "This is the BEST $2500 I have ever spent"

I put a deposit on the slip today....can't wait !

Quint,

Would you mind sharing the location of the marina? Do they have transient docking? We are always looking for new places to go.

Good luck and enjoy!

Believe me...you'll enjoy the slip and you won't miss the comedy show at the ramp.

"....you won't miss the comedy show at the ramp"

......Amen to that...especially with this "trailer boat".

Once it is in a slip you may use it less because if it is not a nice enough day(save fuel) at least you can do some cleaning etc. (couple of beers) on the water, it is now a floating condo! Good decision you won't go back. :smt038
