My buddy has an '89 270 AJ, with the 6 cylinder engines and it has the original remote cartridge fuel filters which are mounted to the fuel tank. He could not get an engine started after a tune up and it turns out the filter was not seated properly, so fuel would not pump.

Mechanic suggested he change the whole assembly over to the newer style screw on style filter. First of all, is this good advice? and if yes, can someone give me a recommendation on the where he could find these?

You should be able to buy a filter base and filter at most any marine supply store. Take the old ones off and mount the new ones in place of them, if they are like the truck filter bases, they so look close, the new one will mount in the same place the old one is now.

You can still get elements for those tank mounted filters. My '89 has them and spin on filters at the engines. The first is a coarser filter and the spin on is a finer mesh. That filter is probablly a Fram. I think the number was recently posted on another thread by Sundancer. Car Quest sells the replacement elements. Its a Fram C1110PL.
