I'm interested in a 2006 Sea Ray 320 with twin 350 MAG MPI. The boat is a V drive with every option on it. The asking price is $100K and from the pictures it seems to be in very good condition. The issue is that, after looking at the picture of the engine room, I'm concerned about the two engines been so close together with no room to do any work. Is that something I should be concerned about? I looked at pictures of the 340's engine rooms and they look the same. If this is a problem, what size Sea Ray should I consider (38, 39) to find a decent ER.
Thanks

Not a Sea Ray, but here is the ad from the Jacksonville Times-Union paper web site;

After looking on line for some ads for 42 foot 4160 Regals 2001 models, I have to ask, just what the hell are these made from? Gold? I found more then one ad with a starting price of $299,000.00 for 2001 models.

Haveing those engines so close together does make it a pain in the butt to work on! Very similar to the new Amberjack 290's with V-Drives!

If you don't plan on working on the boat yourself (routine maintenance) then figure on spending a pretty penny to have a mechanic do it for you.

Do yourself a favor and get a surveyor to look at the boat! Odds are if the boat is a bank repo, the person who originally bought it did not take good care of it if he/she could not afford to pay for it.

They are close together, and so are those in the 340, but not nearly so bad. I can get between my engines on my 340 to change out plugs, fuel filter, hoses...

I can't do that in a 320.

Thanks for the comments. There is in my area a 2002 Sea Ray 340 with V drive and twins 6.2 for sale at $129K. I might go and take a look at it. It's more money than the 320 but probably it would be a better deal after all.

If you look at the spec closely you will notice a 2002 340 is the same LOA and beam as a newer model (2003 and up) 320. So, there will not be any difference in the engine compartment between these two boats.

If the boat is good in a survey- average selling price on that 2006 would at least be 125-150k. A quick search online showed 150-180 'asking' prices. Might be worth the extra maintenance cost...

The 06 320 is a much different boat than the 02 340. Style, equipment, etc. Depends if you want the newer styling or old. The engines in the 320 are the same as my 310 and I do all routine maintenance myself. It's a little tight, but not bad. And like trit said, it will be about the same engine room as the 02 340. That's a great deal on the 320, average on the 340 at best.

It does take someone that is either very limber, or very thin and small to fit in there and do all the maintenance that is required-especially the 100 hr service. I was able to do a lot of it myself, but used a local marine mechanic who had a helper that was like a toothpick and somewhat short (I'm 6'2) and was able to climb in there pretty easily. If you can go for the newer 340's-which I think changed out during 2003, then you will find much more room in there. For me, I could not afford the 340 in the year with all the options I wanted without stretching my budget too tight, and love the 320 given the above.

Does the 2006 320 have the extended warranty on the engines? if so, then it might be the way to go, if not, then maybe look at a 2003, or 2004 340.

Good luck and let us know what you decide.

The engine room is tight.

I assume it has a genny, based on your comments.

If so, I think that is a very good price. How many hours?

If posssible just spend and extra 10 -15k and get a repoed 340. There are tons available on yachtauctions.com. Now is the time to buy if you don't have your own boat to get rid of.

I agree with the above comments. 2006 320 vs 2002 340. The 320 is worth a lot more. That being said, I would consider a 2004-5 340. The new 340 came out in 2003.5

Given that the boat is a repo - While there are many repo's out there now - it is easy for someone to say get a 340 - the key is finding a nice 340 repo. If the 320 is a nice boat - then I would proceed. That is a good value where you could use the boat for probably 4 or 5 years and still get your money back. The engine room is tight. But so are all sub 35' - with V-Drives. You ought to be able to buy a non-repo old style 340 at 100k. The 320 is worth 30k more than the 02 - 340.

Well, while I was debating between the 320 and the 340, someone faster than me made an offer to the boat. Maybe the destiny decided that for me the 340 is a better choice.
Unfortunately, on the west coast, most of the good deals are in S. California.
Anyway, it's fun looking for a boat.
